Gen Y workplace: over before it began

November 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ladies and gentleman, I am sorry to have to announce that Generation Y has been cancelled. Well, at least it has been according to Steve Carter, a managing director over at Nigel Lynn. With the current economic downturn rapidly morphing into the mother of all fiscal belly-flops, what the business world needs now is Gen X grafters, not metrosexual-floppy-haired Y-ers who are genetically incapable of meeting a deadline. Or as Steve puts it:

In this market, that attitude isn’t going to go down terribly well with potential employers – many of whom may well be boomers and Generation X themselves and who had to really buckle down during the last major recession. And it’s going to be those people who can demonstrate that they can add real value to a business that will succeed. That means getting back to the Generation X ethos of hard work, long hours and potentially less time off.

Wow! Sounds like this year’s office party at Nigel Lynn is a guarenteed barrel of laughs with jokers like Steve on the job.

On a more serious note, can I remind those of you who have already received your Gen Y Membership Pack to post it back to the return address printed on the back of the envelope. Generation X (v.2) handbooks will now be issued upon induction.
